iOS 12 now seeding; top new features explained
Apple has begun rolling the latest iOS 12 update on eligible devices. While the newest version of iOS does not bring anything particularly flashy to the interface, what it focuses on instead is improving the user experience through nifty new features and performance enhancements, especially on older devices. Here are the top iOS 12 features to look out for:
- Smoother UI: With even older devices like the iPhone 5S and iPad Mini 2 getting iOS 12, Apple has made sure that the UI is fluid and glitch free. Therefore, animations on iOS 12 are less pronounced and apps are claimed to open faster.
- Sorted notifications: Users will be pleased to learn that Apple has finally introduced grouped notifications on iOS 12, which means that notification will now be grouped by app instead of each one being standalone. This should surely help clean clutter from the Notification Centre. Also, users can now manage notifications from the Notification Centre itself.
- Digital detox function: The new Screen Time feature on iOS 12 allows users to put app limits, thereby helping them to spend less time on their device. However, this is more of a passive feature and can be easily extended.
- Gesture-based UI for iPads: All iPads which are compatible with iOS 12 will now feature iPhone X like gesture-based UI navigation for a more consistent experience across Apple’s ecosystem. Of course, users can still use the iPad’s home button to navigate the old school way if they want.
- Memoji: Memoji is a functionality baked into Animoji which allows users to create an animated character of themselves. Additionally, Animoji now also has four new characters – T. Rex, koala, ghost, and tiger. Additionally, there is tongue and wink detection for better accuracy. Obviously, these features are only available on iPhone X and 2018 iPhones.
- Google Maps on CarPlay: Finally, Apple is allowing third-party navigation apps on its CarPlay interface. Until now, users were only limited to Apple Maps for navigation, which has never been anyone’s favourite app. Now, Google Maps are confirmed to be available very soon on CarPlay.
